Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express to Get Anantnag Stop Soon: Major Boost for Kashmir Connectivity The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is set to receive a new commercial stoppage at Anantnag railway station, marking another important milestone in the expansion of rail connectivity across Jammu and Kashmir. The decision was taken after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to review ongoing railway infrastructure projects and discuss future initiatives aimed at improving transportation and supporting economic development in the Union Territory. According to Northern Railway, the meeting concluded with a decision to introduce a commercial halt for the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express at Anantnag. Officials stated that the new stoppage is expected to benefit commuters, tourists, students, traders, and local businesses by providing a faster and more convenient transport option to one of South Kashmir's key economic and cultural centres. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the decision reflects the government's effort to address local aspirations and improve public transport accessibility. He noted that adding Anantnag as a scheduled stop would enhance passenger convenience while strengthening regional connectivity. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah welcomed the move, saying that the Vande Bharat service has already transformed travel between Jammu and Srinagar by significantly reducing travel time while offering modern amenities and improved comfort for both residents and visitors. He added that expanding the train's accessibility would further improve mobility across the region. Growing Success of the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has witnessed strong passenger demand since its launch. Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the service between Srinagar and Katra on June 6, 2025, marking the beginning of high-speed semi-bullet train operations in the Kashmir Valley. At present, two Vande Bharat train sets operate on the route, providing four daily train services. Owing to consistently high occupancy, the Ministry of Railways increased the train's capacity from 16 coaches to 20 coaches in April. The service was also extended from Katra to Jammu Tawi, making travel even more convenient for passengers coming from Jammu. The train currently covers the 269-kilometre journey between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar in approximately 4 hours and 45 minutes, making it one of the fastest and most comfortable travel options available in the region. Current Route and Stops Before the addition of Anantnag, the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express operated with four intermediate stoppages: Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Station Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Reasi Banihal With Anantnag set to become the fifth commercial stop, passengers from South Kashmir will receive improved access to the region's flagship rail service.
