Ayushman Bharat Finally Reaches West Bengal Union Health Minister JP Nadda officially launched the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in West Bengal, bringing the state under the ambit of India's flagship public health insurance programme for the first time. The launch marks a significant development in the country's healthcare landscape, as West Bengal was the last remaining state outside the centrally sponsored scheme. The programme was inaugurated after the West Bengal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Health Authority (NHA). The event was attended by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, senior officials from the Union Health Ministry, and representatives of the state health department. Addressing the gathering, JP Nadda said the inclusion of West Bengal in the national scheme would enable millions of residents to access quality healthcare without facing a heavy financial burden. He added that the rollout also brings several complementary health initiatives to the state, including upgraded Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, expanded preventive healthcare services, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination for eligible girl children. What Is Ayushman Bharat? Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is the Government of India's flagship health assurance programme. It provides eligible beneficiary families with cashless health insurance coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family every year for secondary and tertiary medical treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals across India. The scheme aims to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses, improve access to quality healthcare, and protect economically weaker families from catastrophic health expenditure. Beneficiaries can receive treatment in thousands of empanelled hospitals across the country, making healthcare more accessible even when travelling outside their home district or state. Who Will Benefit in West Bengal? According to the Union Government, nearly 1.43 crore households across West Bengal are expected to benefit from the implementation of the scheme. The eligible beneficiaries include: 1.24 crore economically weaker households identified under the eligibility criteria. 15.95 lakh senior citizens aged 70 years and above, who will receive health coverage under the expanded provisions. 3.06 lakh frontline healthcare workers, recognising their contribution to the public health system. Officials said that millions of individuals who were previously outside the national programme will now be able to access cashless hospital treatment through the Ayushman Bharat network. ₹976 Crore Released for Implementation The Centre announced that ₹976 crore has already been released to facilitate the implementation of the scheme in West Bengal. According to the Union Health Ministry, the financial assistance has been sanctioned within a month of the formation of the new state government. The funds will be used for infrastructure development, digital integration, beneficiary registration, hospital empanelment, administrative support, and awareness campaigns to ensure a smooth rollout across the state. Officials said the allocation would help strengthen the healthcare delivery system while enabling hospitals to integrate with the Ayushman Bharat digital platform. Ayushman Arogya Mandirs to Strengthen Primary Healthcare Alongside the insurance scheme, the Centre announced the expansion of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which are upgraded health and wellness centres providing comprehensive primary healthcare. These facilities offer services such as: Maternal and child healthcare Immunisation services Screening for diabetes, hypertension, and common cancers Mental health support Essential medicines and diagnostic facilities Telemedicine consultations Preventive healthcare and health awareness programmes The objective is to strengthen healthcare at the grassroots level while reducing the need for expensive hospital treatment through early diagnosis and preventive care. HPV Vaccination Programme for Girl Children The Union Health Minister also highlighted the launch of the HPV vaccination programme for eligible girl children in West Bengal. Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer among women. The vaccination programme aims to protect girls before exposure to the virus, significantly reducing the future risk of cervical cancer. Health officials said the vaccination drive will be implemented through schools, government health centres, and designated vaccination camps, supported by awareness campaigns to encourage participation among eligible families. How Beneficiaries Can Access the Scheme Eligible families can avail themselves of Ayushman Bharat benefits by verifying their eligibility through the official beneficiary identification system. Once enrolled, beneficiaries can receive cashless treatment at empanelled hospitals by presenting their Ayushman card or other approved identification documents. The scheme covers a wide range of medical procedures, including surgeries, emergency treatment, intensive care, cancer treatment, cardiac procedures, orthopaedic care, and several other secondary and tertiary healthcare services. Significance of the Rollout The inclusion of West Bengal completes the nationwide implementation of Ayushman Bharat, extending the reach of one of the world's largest publicly funded health insurance programmes. Public health experts say the programme has the potential to improve healthcare accessibility, especially for economically vulnerable families, elderly citizens, and people living in rural and underserved areas.
