Mumbai Landslip, Seven Bodies Identified, Rajawadi Hospital Gets the Grim Task of Naming the Toll

A landslip in Mumbai Kurla area early on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, left seven people dead and four others injured, triggering a rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The incident took place at around 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical in Kurla West. The BMC classified the incident as a Level II emergency. According to officials, debris fell onto nearby rooms of the chawl structure. Witnesses told officials that between six and eight people may have been trapped under the debris. The bodies of all seven deceased were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, according to the police clerk handling post mortem records. Among those identified were 18 year old Sohel Ansari and 14 year old Mohamad Ansari. Both were taken to Rajawadi Hospital following the incident. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishal declared Mohamad brought dead, while Sohel had sustained head injuries. Around 50 BMC personnel, along with NDRF teams, are involved in the rescue operation. Emergency workers are continuing to clear the debris and search the affected area for anyone who may still be trapped. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawade also reached the site to take stock of the situation. The rescue operation remains underway as authorities continue assessing the damage and coordinating relief efforts in the affected Kurla neighbourhood.
