Upper Assam Underwater: 21 Dead, While the Rain Seems Determined to Break Every Record

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam’s Upper Assam region worsened sharply on Tuesday, with 21 people reportedly losing their lives within a span of 24 hours, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The fresh casualties have pushed the state’s flood-related death toll this year to 31, highlighting the growing severity of the disaster as floodwaters continue to inundate several districts. Number of People Affected Rises to 5.6 Lakh The scale of the flooding has also expanded significantly. The number of people affected by the floods rose to around 5.6 lakh on Tuesday, up from approximately three lakh reported on Sunday and Monday. The sharp rise in the affected population has added to the pressure on local authorities and disaster response agencies involved in rescue and relief operations across the state. Sivasagar Among Worst-Hit Districts Upper Assam’s Sivasagar remains one of the worst-affected districts. The situation has been aggravated by the rising waters of the Dikhow River, which was reported to be flowing at a severe flood level on Wednesday morning. According to the disaster management authorities, Sivasagar recorded the highest number of fatalities during the latest 24-hour period. As many as 13 people, including two children, reportedly died in Sivasagar on Monday. Six other fatalities were recorded in neighbouring Charaideo and Jorhat, while one person lost their life in Golaghat. Death Toll Reaches 31 The latest casualties have taken Assam’s total flood-related death toll for the year to 31. The unusually high number of deaths recorded in a single day underlines the seriousness of the ongoing flood situation, particularly in Upper Assam, where swollen rivers and rising water levels have affected communities across multiple areas. Authorities are continuing to monitor river levels and the evolving flood situation, while rescue and relief operations remain a priority in the affected regions.
