South Asian Festival Hits 10Year Milestone, A Decade of Culture, Celebration and Plenty of Reasons to Eat Again

A Berkshire festival celebrating South Asian culture is marking its 10th anniversary this year, bringing together thousands of people for a weekend of music, food, culture and community. The Reading Mela, held at Palmer Park every summer, is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors this year. The free festival was launched in 2016 and has since grown into a major community event celebrating the diversity of South Asian heritage. Festival co-founder Aradhana Singh said the event was created to bring different communities together through a shared celebration of culture. The festival offers visitors an opportunity to experience a mix of South Asian music, food and traditions while also learning about cultures beyond their own. Singh said there was something for everyone at the event, with people attending to discover different forms of music, cuisine and cultural expression. The festival has consequently become a space for people from different backgrounds to meet, interact and celebrate together. More Than Music and Food While entertainment remains a major attraction, the Reading Mela also provides an opportunity to promote wider community initiatives. One such effort involves blood plasma donation. Reading is home to one of three national plasma donation centres, and the festival offers organisers an opportunity to reach communities that can sometimes be difficult to engage with through traditional donation campaigns. By combining cultural celebration with community outreach, the festival aims to demonstrate how large public events can create opportunities for social engagement beyond the main programe. A Decade of Community Celebration Ten years after its launch, the Reading Mela has established itself as a celebration of South Asian heritage while maintaining an open invitation to people from all communities. With thousands expected to attend its 10th-anniversary edition, the festival's organisers are looking to continue its central message: cultural celebrations can provide a space for people to share traditions, discover new experiences and build connections across communities.
