Sterling Charged With Dangerous Driving ,This Time, No VAR to Save Him

Former England winger Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving following a single vehicle crash on the M3 in Hampshire earlier this year. The 31 year old, who most recently played for Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, crashed his Lamborghini into barriers on the southbound M3 near the Minley Interchange on the morning of 28 May 2026. According to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Sterling was arrested and later released on bail while enquiries continued. Police have now confirmed that he is facing three charges: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen. No other vehicles were involved in the collision and no injuries were reported. Sterling is due to appear before Basingstoke Magistrates Court on 15 September. Police had previously suspected the footballer of driving while unfit through drugs, but that allegation has not been included among the charges announced by the force. A source close to Sterling told BBC Sport in May that there was no proof of drugs in his system. The source also described the former England international as having experienced an extremely tough couple of years, saying he had been made to feel worthless" and "forgotten about. A difficult period for Sterling The latest legal development comes during a challenging period in Sterling football career. Sterling has been without a club since leaving Feyenoord at the end of last season. He joined the Dutch club in February on a short-term contract after leaving Chelsea by mutual consent. His career had previously taken him to some of the biggest clubs in English football. Chelsea signed Sterling from Manchester City in 2022 for a reported £47.5m. During seven years at Manchester City, he won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup. Before that, Sterling had established himself at Liverpool, where his performances earned him a move to Manchester City and eventually a regular place in the England setup. His time at Chelsea, however, proved considerably more complicated. In 2024, he joined Arsenal on loan, before returning to Chelsea in 2025. He was subsequently left outside the first-team setup and trained separately from the senior squad. An accomplished England career Sterling was also a major figure for England for more than a decade. He earned 82 international caps between 2012 and 2022, representing the Three Lions at three World Cups and two European Championships. At his peak, Sterling was one of England's most prominent attacking players and played a key role for both club and country. Now, however, his immediate focus is likely to be the legal proceedings stemming from the M3 incident, alongside uncertainty over his next move in football. The charges remain allegations, and Sterling is due to appear in court in September.
