Royal Reunion Remains Stuck in the Planning Stage

Prince Harry is continuing plans to visit the United Kingdom next week with his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, provided suitable security arrangements can be finalised. There had been uncertainty over whether Meghan and the couple's children would accompany the Duke of Sussex from their home in the United States. However, Prince Harry's representatives say preparations are currently proceeding on the basis that the family will travel together. A spokesperson for the Duke said he is continuing to explore every available option to ensure the visit can take place safely while giving his children the opportunity to spend time in the UK. Security has balance the central issue in Prince Harry's decisions about returning to Britain with his family. Since stepping back from official royal duties, he has consistently argued that the current level of police protection available to him during UK visits does not adequately reflect the security risks he believes he faces. In an interview last year, Prince Harry said he could not envisage bringing Meghan and their children back to the UK without stronger security arrangements in place. The dispute centres on decisions made by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC), the body responsible for determining security provisions for members of the Royal Family and other high-profile public figures. Prince Harry has maintained that the level of protection offered during his visits is insufficient and has questioned whether the risk notice fully account for potential threats. The Duke previously challenged those security decisions through the courts, but his legal appeal was unsuccessful. During that period, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet have not returned to the UK, meaning the children have not visited their grandfather, King Charles III, in Britain. The last occasion Prince Harry and Meghan were together in the UK was during the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Since then, the Duke has travelled to Britain alone on several occasions, including a visit to see King Charles, which was viewed by some observers as a sign of improving family relations. Current plans for next week's visit remain unchanged, with scheduled engagements expected to proceed as planned. The trip will include activities connected to the Invictus Games, the international sporting competition for wounded, injured and sick service personnel that Prince Harry founded and which is scheduled to be hosted in Birmingham next year. Reports indicate that accommodation has been offered on a royal estate, where security measures are already in place. However, Prince Harry's team has expressed concern that travel to public engagements and appearances outside secure locations continues to present security challenges that require additional protection. While discussions over security arrangements continue, the Duke has indicated that enabling his children to spend time in the UK and maintain connections with their family remains an important objective.
