The Delhi Police is examining a complaint alleging an incident during the singing of Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters on Independence Day, August 15, 2026. Police said the complaint was received at the I.P. Estate Police Station on August 16 and is currently under enquiry.
The complaint was filed by an advocate, who has sought registration of an FIR against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the alleged incident. The allegations concern the conduct of the leaders during the rendition of the national song at the Congress Independence Day function.
What the Complaint Alleges
According to reports, the complaint alleges that Sonia Gandhi made gestures and communicated with people at the event in a manner that the complainant interpreted as objecting to the continuation of Vande Mataram. The complaint also makes allegation concerning Rahul Gandhi conduct during the programme. These claims remain allegation and have not been established by the police.
The police have so far said they are enquiring into the complaint. An enquiry does not by itself establish that an offence has occurred, and any further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
Political Controversy
The incident has triggered a wider political dispute between the Congress and the BJP over the rendition of Vande Mataram at the party's Independence Day event. BJP leaders have criticised the Congress over the episode, while the Congress has rejected the allegations of disrespect.
The controversy has also prompted complaints in other places, adding to the political attention surrounding the issue.
For now, the Delhi Police enquiry remains at the preliminary stage. The key question will be whether the allegations made in the complaint are supported by evidence and whether they warrant further legal action.
