Devotees Gather in their Thousands as Ratha Yatra 2026 Transforms London into a Spiritual Haven

London, United Kingdom: The spirit of devotion and community came alive in London as the Shree Jagannatha Society UK (SJSUK) celebrated Ratha Yatra 2026 with religious ceremonies and a grand public festival attended by more than a thousand devotees. The celebrations were held on two occasions. The sacred tithi was observed on July 16 at Shree Ram Mandir in Southall, followed by the main public festival on July 18 at the Navnat Centre in Hayes. Ratha Yatra marks the annual journey of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra and symbolises the belief that the divine is accessible to everyone. The London celebrations sought to recreate the spiritual atmosphere associated with Shree Jagannatha Dham in Puri through devotional singing, prayers, kirtan, bhajan and community participation. Following the Ratha Pratishtha ceremony, the deities were traditionally adorned with Taahias before the Agnya Mala was ceremonially offered. The deities were then carried in the Pahandi Bije procession to a beautifully decorated chariot. The Chhera Pahanra ritual was performed by Lord Rami Ranger, Ajay Thakur of the High Commission of India, and Shri Kuldeep Sekhawat, President of OFBJP UK and Director of MATV UK and Swagat TV Network. Thousands of devotees then joined the procession, pulling the chariot while chanting devotional slogans including "Jai Jagannatha" and "Hari Bolo". Devotees also participated in puja and received Bhog Prasad featuring traditional offerings such as Khichidi, Dalama and Sukhila Bhoga. The celebrations also included devotional performances by Chinmaya Mission, Sachkhand Nanak Dham, SJSUK Kirtan Mandali, Utkalika and the SJSUK Bhajan Group. Swami Siva Chidananda Saraswathi spoke about the spiritual significance of Ratha Yatra and the Akash Marg. The deities will remain at Hindu Temple Slough until the Bahuda Yatra on July 26. Meanwhile, SJSUK Chairperson Dr. Sahadev Swain announced that the organisation is in advanced negotiations to acquire land near Heathrow Airport for a permanent Shree Jagannatha Mandir London, marking a potential new chapter for the community's religious and cultural activities in the UK.
