New Delhi, June 1, 2026: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to direct the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination in a computer-based test (CBT) format, allowing the fresh examination to proceed in the existing pen-and-paper mode. The Court observed that introducing a different examination format at this stage would lead to significant logistical and administrative challenges, particularly with the re-examination already scheduled. ## Court Rejects Request for CBT-Based Retest During the hearing, the petitioners requested that the re-examination be conducted as a computer-based test instead of the traditional offline format. However, the Supreme Court declined to issue such a direction, noting that altering the examination process at this point could disrupt preparations and create operational difficulties for authorities responsible for conducting the nationwide test. The Court emphasized the importance of ensuring that the scheduled re-examination proceeds without unnecessary complications. ## Background: NEET-UG 2026 Cancellation The original NEET-UG 2026 examination was conducted on **May 3** across the country. However, on **May 12**, the examination was cancelled following allegations of a question paper leak that raised concerns about the integrity and fairness of the admission process. The cancellation affected lakhs of medical aspirants awaiting admission to undergraduate medical and dental programmes across India. ## CBI Investigation Underway Following the allegations, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched an investigation to determine the source of the alleged paper leak and identify those responsible. The investigation is continuing as authorities examine evidence related to the reported breach and possible involvement of individuals or organized networks. ## Fresh Examination Scheduled for June 21 The National Testing Agency has scheduled the fresh NEET-UG 2026 examination for **June 21**. The examination will be conducted in the traditional pen-and-paper format, consistent with previous editions of the entrance test.
