The Newbury Show is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitor over the weekend, as the annual agricultural event brings together farming, rural traditions and countryside activities at Newbury Show ground. The two day show will feature live stock competitions, rural craft and a range of interactive activities, offering visitors an opportunity to experience different aspects of British agriculture and countryside life. Organisers say their aim is to showcase the very best of British agriculture and countryside to the general public. The event will open at 08:30 BST on both days. Trade stands will close at 18:00 on Saturday and 17:00 on Sunday, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the attractions and display. More Than Just Farming While live stock shows and agricultural displays remain central to the event, the Newbury Show also serves as a social gathering for people working in the farming industry. Luke Mercy, a cattle farmer from West Berkshire, said he attends agricultural shows partly to catch up with friends from across the country. We go showing because of the social side. With farming, it's a very isolating industry, he said, describing the familiar faces he encounters at different events. Mercy added that travelling around the country for shows had helped him build friendship beyond his immediate community. I'd say I have more friends around the country than I have in a 20 mile radius of home. It's like an extended family. Everyone pulls together, he said. His experience highlights the role agricultural shows can play in bringing together people whose work often involve long hours and limited social interaction. An Annual Tradition Returns The Newbury Show was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic before returning in 2023. Its continued presence on the agricultural calendar reflects the enduring appeal of events that connect the public with farming and rural life. With live stock display, hands on activities and opportunitie for farmers to reconnect, the show is preparing for a busy weekend. For visitors, it offers a chance to explore the countryside beyond the usual city routine.
