Dhruv Jurel had to wait a long time for his moment, but when it finally arrived, the India wicketkeeper batter had plenty of reasons to celebrate.
Jurel reached his second Test century after facing 171 deliveries, producing an innings built more on patience and perseverance than flashy strokeplay. His hundred came with a touch of drama, too.
Jurel punched Asitha Fernando towards mid-off and immediately set off for a single. The throw headed towards the stumps, leaving Jurel briefly vulnerable to being run out on 99. Fortunately for him, the fielder missed, allowing the batter to complete the run and reach three figures.
Jurel responded by taking off his helmet and acknowledging the applause from the crowd.
From the other end, Mohammed Siraj quickly ran towards him and embraced his teammate in celebration.
The image captured the nature of Jurel’s innings. His shirt and trousers were covered in mud, reflecting the effort involved in spending so much time at the crease.
He raised his bat before lifting his sleeve and revealing the tattoo on his left bicep: Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.
