Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday criticised the BJP led government in Bihar over ongoing student protests, accusing the government of using the police to suppress protesters instead of addressing their concerns over recruitment examinations and jobs. The protests have been taking place at Gardanibagh, where students and job aspirants have been raising questions about the recruitment process and demanding changes to examination procedures. Students Raise Recruitment Demands The protesters’ demands include changes to the proposed fourth Teacher Recruitment Examination, or TRE-4. Among their demands are a single stage preliminary and mains examination structure, removal of negative marking and 100% domicile-based recruitment. The agitation is part of broader concerns among students and job aspirants over recruitment examinations, delays, transparency and allegations of irregularities. Rahul Gandhi Questions Government Response Gandhi argued that the concerns raised by students were straightforward and deserved answers from the government. He questioned why alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations had not been adequately addressed and why action had not been taken over allegations of paper leaks. He also criticised what he described as the continued uncertainty surrounding recruitment examinations and its impact on young people seeking government employment. According to Gandhi, the controversy surrounding Bihar Public Service Commission examinations is not new, with students having protested for an extended period over the recruitment process, examination patterns, delays and transparency. Criticism Over Police Action The Opposition leader also attacked the government’s handling of the demonstrations. Gandhi alleged that instead of responding to the students demands, authorities were using force to manage the protests. He referred to the reported use of batons and water cannons and the detention of students, arguing that such measures do not address the underlying concerns about recruitment examinations. His criticism forms part of a wider political attack on the Bihar government over its handling of student and job related grievances. The Larger Recruitment Debate At the heart of the protests is the demand for greater transparency and predictability in government recruitment. For thousands of students and job aspirants, competitive examinations represent an important route into public sector employment. Concerns over delays, examination procedures and alleged irregularities can therefore have a significant impact on candidates who spend years preparing for such tests.
