Delhi Building Collapse, 5 Dead, Owner Booked as Rescue Operation Continue

New Delhi- At least five people were killed after a five storey residential building being used as a private hostel collapsed in Delhi Satya Niketan on Sunday afternoon, triggering a major rescue and relief operation. The Delhi Police has registered a case against the owner of the private hostel on charges related to culpable homicide and negligence. At the same time, the Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident to establish the circumstances that led to the building collapse. The incident occurred in the afternoon when the residential structure, which was being used as a hostel, suddenly collapsed. The incident prompted emergency agencies to rush to the site after reports that several students could be trapped beneath the debris. Major Rescue Operation Launched A large scale rescue operation was launched following the collapse. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), CATS and Civil Defence were deployed at the site. Police said at least eight fire tender were involved in the rescue operation. Emergency personnel worked to clear the rubble and search for people who might have been trapped inside the collapsed structure. Local resident also joined the emergency response, helping authorities in clearing debris and assisting with the rescue effort. As a precautionary measure, an adjacent building was also vacated to prevent any further risk to residents and rescue personnel. Three Injured Taken to Hospital Three injured people were admitted to hospital following the collapse. One of the patients sustained a limb injury and underwent surgery, while another suffered minor injuries and was discharged after remaining under observation. Authorities continued to monitor the condition of those receiving treatment. The death toll currently stands at five, although rescue operations continued as authorities worked to determine whether anyone else remained trapped beneath the rubble. Police Book Hostel Owner The Delhi Police has registered a case against the owner of the private hostel under provision concerning culpable homicide and negligence. The police investigation is expected to focus on the condition of the building, its construction and use as a hostel, and whether applicable safety requirements were followed. ABVP national general secretary Virendra Singh Solanki questioned why the MCD had allegedly failed to inspect buildings and PG accommodation where students live. Solanki said several students were feared trapped under the rubble and demanded that the civic body ensure that building and PG accommodation housing students comply with prescribed safety standards. He also demanded a response from the MCD Commissioner within 24 hour. Solanki warned that the ABVP would enter the Commissioner's office and seek his resignation if its demands were not met. PMO Expresses Grief The Prime Minister Office expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Satya Niketan building collapse and offered condolences to the families of those who died. In a post on X, the PMO said it was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured. It also said authorities were working at the site and assisting people affected by the incident. Amit Shah Speaks to Delhi Officials Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed concern over the incident and said he had spoken with the Delhi Chief Minister, Delhi Police Commissioner and NDRF Director General to assess the situation. Shah said the local administration and NDRF were conducting intensive rescue operation in coordination at the site. He also said the injured were being provided necessary medical assistance and expressed his wishes for their speedy recovery. Delhi CM Reviews Rescue Efforts Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said teams from several emergency and civic agencies were present at the site. According to the Chief Minister, personnel from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, MCD, CATS and Civil Defence were involved in the response.
