Fairford File, Rubio Point to Foreign Actor, Evidence Yet to Join the Investigation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor, but he did not provide evidence or further details to support the claim. Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Rubio linked the incident to wider concern about threats against American interests, referring specifically to Iran’s publicly stated threats. Tehran, however, has categorically denied any involvement and described suggestions linking Iran to the incident as unfounded and malicious speculation. The incident began over the weekend after police were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. A major incident was declared and dozens of nearby home were evacuated as authorities investigated the circumstances. Five UK national, all men in their 20s and aged between 23 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of terror offences. They were subsequently released on bail and remain under investigation, with Counter Terrorism Policing saying their release is subject to strict conditions concerning their movement and contact with others. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who head Counter Terrorism Policing, said investigators were considering all angles. He said this included the possibility that the activity could have involved proxies or individuals knowingly or unknowingly acting on behalf of a foreign state. Rubio described the incident as a serious situation but acknowledged that further information would emerge as the investigation continued. His comment therefore represent an attribution or assessment rather than publicly presented evidence establishing the involvement of a particular foreign government. The Iranian embassy in London has strongly rejected any connection to the incident. Iran has previously warned that military bases used for attacks against Iranian territory could be considered legitimate targets. RAF Fairford has served as a forward operating location for the US Air Force for decades and has recently been used by American bombers operating in the Middle East. The UK government has approved US use of the base for what it describes as defensive strikes against Iran. Meanwhile, the investigation has continued on the ground. On Tuesday, a heavily guarded police cordon remained around RAF Fairford, while residents of nearby Whelford were gradually allowed to return home. Local resident described an atmosphere of uncertainty and concern. One resident told the BBC that she had chosen not to return home immediately, while local councillor Tristan Wilkinson described the mood in the area as one of confusion and weariness. In Fairford, local businesses and resident also reported heightened anxiety, with butcher Andrew Butler saying people were becoming concerned about vehicles they considered suspicious. Political leaders have urged caution while investigators establish the fact. Prime Minister Andy Burnham chaired a Cobra meeting and asked people not to speculate, while US President Donald Trump publicly questioned the decision to release the suspects on bail. For now, the central question remains unresolved: while Rubio has publicly pointed to the possibility of foreign involvement, investigators have not publicly established which foreign actor, if any, was responsible. The five suspects remain under investigation, and authorities have indicated that multiple possibilities are still being examined.
