Hamid Ansari Remarks Spark BJP Attack, Congress Faces Muslim League Maoist Character Charge

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday, September 21, 2026, stepped up its attack on the Congress over remark made by former Vice President Hamid Ansari about Jawaharlal Nehru views on Hindu right wing communalism. The BJP claimed that Ansari’s remarks had exposed what it described as the Congress Muslim League Maoist character. Ansari made the remark while speaking at an event commemorating late constitutional expert and author A.G. Noorani at the India Islamic Cultural Centre. Referring to Noorani 2019 book The RSS, A Menace to India, Ansari cited a view attributed to former Prime Minister Nehru that the real danger to India was not communism, but Hindu right wing communalism. The reference quickly became a point of political confrontation. BJP national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi argued that Ansari remarks demonstrated that the Congress had moved towards what he called a Muslim League Maoist Congress. He also alleged that the party had adopted an ultra left position and linked the argument to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi earlier remarks about the Indian Union Muslim League. Trivedi further referred to Gandhi June 2023 comments in Washington, where Gandhi had described the Indian Union Muslim League as a secular party. The BJP spokes person used that statement to argue that the Congress present political position represented a continuation of what he characterised as its association with Muslim League politics. The controversy therefore revolves around two separate issues, Ansari reference to Nehru assessment of Hindu right wing communalism, and the BJP interpretation of what that reference says about the Congress present ideological position. The Muslim League Maoist description is a BJP political allegation rather than an independently established characterization of the Congress. The episode adds another layer to the continuing political debate over Nehru views on communism, Hindu nationalism and the ideological direction of Indian politics, with competing parties drawing different conclusions from historical statements and contemporary political alliances.
