Omar Moves Statehood Resolution, BJP Moves Into, We Won’t Tolerate It Mode

The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Friday after BJP MLA, led by Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma, entered the well of the House in protest against a resolution moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah seeking the restoration of full state hood to Jammu and Kashmir. The confrontation unfolded on the fourth day of the autumn session, when Abdullah introduced a resolution calling upon the Government of India for the immediate and urgent restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution further stated that it should be forwarded to the Government of India for consideration. According to the resolution, the latest move builds on earlier resolutions adopted by the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly on June 26, 2000, and November 6, 2024. The BJP strongly objected to the resolution, with its MLAs raising slogans against the ruling National Conference. BJP members described the resolution as anti national and protested against its introduction in the House. The disagreement quickly spilled into the well of the Assembly, with BJP legislators staging a protest and creating noisy scenes during the proceedings. The episode once again highlighted the sharp political divisions between the National Conference led government and the BJP over the question of statehood. Omar Abdullah Pushes Statehood Demand The resolution moved by Omar Abdullah calls for Jammu and Kashmir to regain the status of a full fledged state. The chief minister move places the issue formally before the Assembly and seek to send its demand to the Government of India. Statehood has remained a major political issue in Jammu and Kashmir following the reorganisation of the former state in 2019. The region was divided into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with Jammu & Kashmir retaining a legislature. The National Conference has repeatedly called for the restoration of statehood, making the issue an important part of its political agenda. BJP Objects to the Resolution The BJP opposition to Friday resolution resulted in an immediate confrontation inside the Assembly. Led by Sunil Sharma, BJP MLAs entered the well and raised slogans against the ruling National Conference. The party characterised the resolution as anti national, while objecting to the manner in which the government brought the matter before the House. The protest disrupted the proceedings and turned what was formally a resolution on administrative status into another major political confrontation inside the Assembly. A Continuing Political Dispute The latest clash is part of a broader disagreement over the constitutional and administrative future of Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference led government has made restoration of statehood one of its prominent demands, while the BJP has taken a different position on the issue and has repeatedly criticised the government approach. The competing position were once again visible in the Assembly on Friday, where the statehood resolution became the centre of a heated exchange between the treasury and opposition benches. For now, the resolution represents the J&K Assembly's latest formal expression of its demand for the restoration of statehood.
