Partners for Multilateralism Arrive at UN, Non Superpowers Try Building a Bigger Table

India is set to join a group of countries advocating for United Nations based multilateralism, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar scheduled to participate in the inaugural Partners for Multilateralism (P4M) meeting in New York. The initiative comes as world leaders gather for the UN General Assembly high level debate, where international cooperation, geopolitical tensions and the future of the multilateral system are expected to feature prominently. Jaishankar arrived in New York on Monday, September 21, at the beginning of the high level session. During his visit, the External Affair Minister is expected to hold several bilateral and multilateral meetings with counterparts from other countries. He is also scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 26. A new platform for multilateralism The Partners for Multilateralism meeting is being positioned around support for the UN based multilateral system, with participating countries seeking to engage outside what the grouping describes as traditional superpower politics. For India, participation provides another platform to articulate its long standing emphasis on strategic autonomy, multilateral cooperation and a greater role for developing countries in global decision making. The initiative also comes at a time when questions over the effectiveness of existing international institutions have become increasingly prominent, particularly amid conflicts and competing geopolitical interests.
