Purification Politics, Telangana Assembly Gets Dirty as 21 BRS MLAs Face Suspension

The Telangana Assembly turned into a political battleground as the ruling Congress and the opposition BRS clashed for the third consecutive day, culminating in the suspension of 21 BRS MLA, including senior leaders K T Rama Rao and T Harish Rao, for the remainder of the Monsoon Session. The latest confrontation came against the backdrop of an alleged purification ritual in Siddipet, which Congress leaders claim was carried out by BRS workers after a Dalit led dappu protest. The controversy has added a sharp caste politics dimension to an already heated confrontation between the ruling party and the opposition. 21 BRS MLA Suspended Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar suspended the 21 legislators after Minister D Sridhar Babu moved a motion over repeated disruptions in the House. Those suspended include K T Rama Rao, T Harish Rao, Anil Yadav, G Jagadish Reddy, Gangula Kamalakar, Kaushik Reddy, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, Kova Lakshmi, K Manik Rao, Chinta Prabhakar, K Prabhakar Reddy, M Rajashekhar Reddy, P Rajeswar Reddy, Sabita Indra Reddy, Kalvakuntla Sanjay, Talasani Srinivas Yadav, D Sudheer Reddy, V Sunitha Laxma Reddy, K Venkatesh, Vijayudu and KP Vivekananda. The suspension followed more than an hour of confrontation, with both Treasury and Opposition benches refusing to back down from their positions. Congress Targets BRS Over Alleged Ritual Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka accused the BRS of anti Dalit politics, alleging that BRS MLC Tata Madhusudan had insulted the Speaker, who is Dalit, on the first day of the Assembly proceeding. He also linked the second day controversy to the alleged purification ritual in Siddipet, asking how long the opposition would continue what he described as anti Dalit politics. Congress leaders subsequently displayed photographs in the Assembly that they claimed showed the alleged cleansing ritual being conducted at the location where the Dalit dappu protest had taken place. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy also attacked the BRS during the discussion, comparing the Siddipet controversy with a similar alleged purification episode in Uttarakhand involving Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Reddy questioned why a protest involving more than 1,000 Dalit leaders had allegedly been followed by such a ritual, arguing that the dappu is an important part of Madiga Dalit cultural life. KTR Rejects Congress Claims The BRS, however, rejected the Congress narrative. After the suspension, K T Rama Rao and T Harish Rao met Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and accused the Congress government of using the controversy to divert public attention from the state real issues. KTR also made a serious allegation of his own, claiming that photographs presented by Congress were AI generated. He said the BRS would lodge a police complaint and pursue other legal avenues if the police failed to register it. The competing claims have turned what began as a dispute surrounding a protest into a wider political battle over caste, dignity, political conduct and the credibility of evidence being presented by both sides. BJP Calls for Suspension to Be Revoked The BJP also entered the Assembly confrontation, with floor leader E Maheshwar Reddy demanding that the suspension of the BRS MLAs be revoked and that issue concerning the state be discussed. Deputy Chief Minister Vikramarka rejected the argument, saying maintaining the dignity of the Speaker chair was the responsibility of every member of the House. The episode highlights how quickly a politically charged controversy can move from the streets into the Assembly, turning a dispute over an alleged ritual into a broader confrontation between the government and opposition.
