India Chip Dream Takes a Cyber Detour, Vaishnaw Warns Industry to Brace for Attacks

In an interview with PTI, Vaishnaw said India growing capabilities in semiconductor design and manufacturing could be viewed as a threat by some established interests in the global chip value chain. He cautioned the industry to maintain constant vigilance against possible cyber attacks and other forms of disruption. The minister comments come as India seeks to expand its role in the global semi conductor ecosystem. The country has been working to build domestic chip design and manufacturing capabilities, attract investment and reduce vulnerabilities in critical technology supply chains. Cybersecurity Becomes a Growing Concern Vaishnaw said the industry should be prepared for attempts to disrupt India progress as the country develops greater capabilities in semiconductor technology. Such risks could potentially involve cyber attacks or other disruptions affecting critical infrastructure and supply chains. The warning reflects the strategic importance of semiconductors to modern economies. Chips are essential to sectors ranging from electronics and telecommunications to automobiles, defence systems and artificial intelligence. As India increases its presence in the global semiconductor value chain, protecting manufacturing facilities, digital systems, intellectual property and supply networks is likely to become an increasingly important part of the sector development. For India emerging chip industry, the message is therefore straight forward- building the factories may be only one part of the semiconductor race; keeping them secure could be just as critical.
